Stainless Steel Pump Split Cans

Stainless Steel Pump Split Cans - A Smith Pump Company Fabricated Product

We work on pumps almost every day of the year at Smith Pump Company, but it’s rare that a week goes by without a new challenge. These submersible turbine can pumps are made almost entirely from 316 Stainless Steel. They must be, because they are used in an uncommon application.

Mining copper is hard work, but it is made easier through an environmentally friendly process called Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning (SX/EW). These pumps are headed to a SX/EW plant with a copper capacity of 240 million pounds per year. The process requires a pumped solution that can contain up to 20% sulfuric acid. As a result, the list of materials approved for use in the pumps can be counted on two hands.

Flowserve bowl assemblies and SME submersible motors are being assembled in fabricated Smith Pump split cans. Welding 316 stainless steel reduces its corrosion resistant properties, so the cans will have to be thoroughly cleaned and chemically passivated with a citric acid solution.

Smith Pump Company provides solutions for a wide variety of water and wastewater applications, even some that are especially unique. We take pride in facing new problems and delivering products and services that will benefit anyone who needs to move water.
